Overlooked Pieces of Custom Homes

woman dreaming up custom homesTwo things that should never happen when you go to your your custom home while it is being built. The first is that it should never look like a scene out of Home Improvement, the TV show. The second is that you should never get the feeling that something is not quite right. This is especially true if you end up with stairs to nowhere, a utility pole in the middle of your driveway, or a fake door in the wall. While there are many issues that need to be taken care of when it comes to having a custom home built to your specifications, there are always a few that seem to get overlooked or sent to the bottom of the list. Here are just a few of those to keep in mind.

Picking the Best Lot for Your Custom Home

You have spent many agonizing hours choosing every little detail of what should be included in your dream home. However, what many people fail to spend much time going over is picking a suitable lot to have their custom home built on.

Before you even think of laying the foundation, you need to ask a few questions. These includes what will become of the vacant land in the area. You need to know if it is zoned for commercial or residential use. The closer it is to the lot you are looking at, the more important this information becomes. In a few years you may end up living on a main road. Also, ask about the time frame as to when the empty land will be built up because the economy could change the plans and the neighborhood. If you are not familiar with the area, find out where the closest amenities like stores and groceries are located so that they are not too far away.

Find out where utility poles and wires will be placed on the property so you know if you will be able to build on at a later date. You should also inquire as to how close your closest neighbor will be if the homes are not already built. Finally, look into both the schools and the homeowner’s association.

People Take Electricity for Granted in Their Custom Homes

While more and more products are going wireless, there are still those that need to be plugged in for power. Therefore, it is best to ask where the outlets will be placed, both throughout the house and outside. Be sure you have an outlet for your Christmas Tree and the speakers you plan on placing on the deck. These cannot be moved after the custom home is completed.
